After signing up for Google Voice, I started to get SMS spam sent to my mobile phone number

While this is completely unrelated to Linux (except for the fact that Android is built on top of Linux), I felt the need to post this information online to vent..if nothing else. I purchased a Google, HTC Nexus One about two weeks ago and have been very happy with the phone. After updating to Android 2.2 and reading a few posts online about Google Voice, I decided to go ahead and set my account up for it, since it's out of invite-only mode.

First a bit of back-story...I've had my same mobile phone number with AT&T now for about 5 years or so. In my past five years of service with AT&T, I don't recall ever getting a single SMS spam text message that wasn't some offer sent directly by AT&T themselves. These are very rare, and since they are sent directly by AT&T, I don't have a huge problem with them.

That said, it is very unfortunate that I have to report that after signing up with Google Voice and giving them my mobile phone number as a forwarding number, I have started receiving at least one spam SMS message from random phone numbers every day. I ended up installing aFirewall in order to not see the messages when they arrive, but it still gets sent to my phone and I find it quite annoying that Google would give or sell my real phone number to spammers. I received this one a few minutes ago:

I'm not going to post the rest of it, since it contains a webite I've never heard of, but I don't want to give them any free marketing by mentioning the site name. I want to reiterate that these are not spam messages going to my new Google Voice number and then being forwarded to my phone, these are going directly to the mobile phone number that I provided to Google. At least I feel better for ranting in public...

I'm not sure what I expect to get out of posting this information, but I guess I would be curious to know if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them. I just can't imagine that this is coincidence since I've never gotten a spam text message in 5 years and only a few hours after signing up with Google Voice I start receiving them.
